James O'Brien

A former Executive member of the Ontario Bar Association from 1998-2003, including Vice-President, President and Past-President, Jim remains active as a member of its governing council. Jim also served as chair of ALERT (now OBA Foundation), the charitable trust of the OBA. In 2004, he received the Distinguished Service award of the Ontario Bar Association. A past director of the Canadian Bar Association, Jim served for an extended term of 3 years on its Communications committee. He has served the Law Society of Upper Canada as a member of joint committees related to continuing education, paralegal regulation and legal aid and as counsel to Complaints Review Officers.

He is a member, honorary director and past-President of the Hastings Law Association; member, past director and past-President of the Quinte Estate Planning Council; past-member of the Legal Aid Area Committee for Hastings; and has been a member of various local civic, athletic and community committees and organizations for 30+ years. He recently served as chair of the Belleville Downtown Improvement Area for over 5 years and was a director for more than 9 years. He was also a member of the Mayor’s Taskforce on Downtown Belleville from 2011-2014 resulting in approval of a significant capital investment that is receiving international attention.
